Falun Gong hijacking of Sinosat television carriers (June and September 2002)
What happened
Across two episodes in 2002, television carriers on the Chinese Sinosat system were overridden by an interfering uplink and replaced with Falun Gong material. Chinese state accounts describe the first episode as running from 23 to 30 June 2002, affecting nine China Central Television channels and ten provincial channels distributed under the rural TV-signals-to-every-village programme, and blocking World Cup coverage in some rural and remote areas. A second episode began in early September 2002 and, on Xinhua's account relayed by the Associated Press, reached what it called every corner of China on 9 September, affecting CCTV and China Education TV as well as provincial stations. Chinese officials said the interfering uplink was traced to a pirate broadcast operation in Taipei; a Taiwanese telecommunications official called that far-fetched, said investigators had found nothing illegal, and said it was impossible to detect the exact source of the transmissions. No source describes any compromise of the spacecraft: the transponders relayed the strongest carrier presented to them.
Attribution is contested and the sourcing is politically loaded on both sides. Every account of the mechanism and scale comes either from Chinese state organs, which are a party to the dispute, or from wire services relaying them; Taiwan's regulator rejected the geolocation to Taipei, and a Falun Gong figure in Taiwan told Reuters he could not prove they did not do it. What is well attested is that Sinosat carriers were overridden and that Falun Gong material appeared in place of scheduled programming. Who operated the uplink, and from where, is not established by any source retrieved here, so overall confidence is moderate and the technique edges describe the mechanism rather than the actor.
