GPS jamming during the Greek main battle tank competition at Litokhoro (2000)
What happened
In August 2000 the Greek government held a competitive trial at Litokhoro to select the Greek army's next main battle tank, a contract reported at $1.4 billion for 250 vehicles, with the British Challenger 2E, the American M1A1 Abrams, the German Leopard 2A5 and the French Leclerc competing. During the trial the British and American tanks could not acquire a GPS signal for navigation. It was subsequently reported, by the journal Military Review as relayed by Scientific American, that French agents were remotely activating small GPS jammers, described as about one foot high, whenever the British and US tanks were in the field. The incident is one of the earliest widely-cited demonstrations that ground forces' dependence on GPS is exploitable by a low-power, physically small emitter, and that the affected receivers carried no backup navigation.
Two things to know before this record is used. First, the brief that commissioned it labelled the event 'Russian tank trials'; it is not Russian. It is a Greek procurement competition and the jamming is attributed to French agents. Second, the source SPARTA cites (Grau, Lester W., 2000, 'GPS Signals Jammed During Tank Trials', c4i.org) is not the source this record rests on: the account here comes from a 2003 Scientific American article describing the same event, which names Military Review, Grau's own outlet, as the reporting journal. Everything here is at two removes, and the attribution to an allied state's services is recorded as what the sources say rather than as established. overall_confidence is low, used deliberately rather than rounded up.

The source names the devices as GPS jammers, gives their physical scale, describes them as remotely activated against particular targets, and states the effect as tanks unable to acquire a GPS signal for navigation. That is EX-0016.03's mechanism and consequence stated together: noise raised in the GNSS band so signals are not acquired or tracked, and position solutions unavailable. The technique's own observation that modest jammers within the antenna field of view produce outsized effects, and that mobile emitters create intermittent outages aligned with the attacker's objectives, describes the selective activation reported here. GPS was unavailable to the affected tanks while the jammers ran, which is the strongest denial case in this batch. Rejected because the jamming was episodic and target-selective, activated when particular competitors were in the field, and reverted completely, which is SPARTA's own description of disruption rather than denial.
